Civil Society Demands Top Cops Suspended Over Nairobi Shooting, Death in Custody

Nairobi, June 17, 2025 — Pressure is piling on President William Ruto to suspend top security chiefs following two explosive incidents: the close-range shooting of a vendor during Tuesday’s protest in Nairobi, and the earlier death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang’ in police custody.
The UK-based Justice and Equality Council is calling for the immediate suspension of Inspector General Douglas Kanja, his deputy Eliud Lagat, and National Intelligence boss Mohamed Amin, citing gross failure to uphold the Constitution.
“We demand the NPSC immediately suspend or remove the aforementioned officials,” said Council chairperson Sebastian Onyango in a statement.
The civil society group accuses the police of escalating violence against civilians during lawful protests. Tuesday’s demonstrations paralyzed business in Nairobi’s CBD, sparked by outrage over Ojwang’s death at Central Police Station.
In response to public outcry, Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat has stepped aside to allow investigations by the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) to proceed.
So far, several officers have been arrested, including OCS Samson Talaam and Constable James Mukhwana, linked to Ojwang’s death.
The demands signal growing civil resistance to alleged police brutality and impunity. With public trust in law enforcement under strain, all eyes are now on State House for a decisive response.
