While most people tend to know only surface-level information about tequila, there is so much more to discover. As someone who genuinely loves a good quality premium tequila, I’m drawn to its bold flavours and the craftsmanship behind it. This is a spirit far beyond just a party shot.

Yet, in Kenya’s social scene, I frequently hear so many stories, which are misconceptions, about its taste. Many believe tequila is inherently harsh and I believe what they have experienced are mixto tequilas. These are tequilas that, by law, contain at least 51% agave but supplement the rest with added sugars. This blend, along with additives, usually results in a rougher, less palatable profile.

This idea stems from the characteristics of mixto tequilas. Their blend, along with additives, can indeed result in a less pleasant, rougher profile. This is why the tradition of ‘Take a shot, lick some salt and suck some lemon’ became popular as it was a way to get the drink down quickly, covering up the harshness.

However, the reality of a 100% Blue Agave tequila is totally different, offering a truly remarkable tasting experience.
