KNQA CEO Dr. Alice Kande Pushes for Regional Qualifications Harmony at EAC Conference

Entebbe, Uganda – June 26, 2025Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) CEO Dr. Alice Kande has reiterated Kenya’s commitment to regional education integration at a high-level East African Community (EAC) workshop held in Entebbe, Uganda.

The two-day conference, convened by the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) on June 19–20, focused on strengthening mutual recognition of qualifications across East Africa to enhance student mobility, labour migration, and skills transfer.

Addressing education leaders from EAC partner states, regional qualifications bodies, and international development agencies, Dr. Kande shared Kenya’s progress and challenges in equating academic and professional qualifications. She emphasized the need for systems that align national priorities with regional and global trends, calling harmonization “a vital lever for workforce competitiveness.”

Key topics included Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), micro-credentials, and the Refugee Qualifications Passport, with growing interest in recognition systems for individuals lacking formal documentation.

“As KNQA, we are committed to reforms that foster trust, transparency, and cross-border recognition,” Dr. Kande said. “A harmonized qualifications framework is essential for the region’s economic and human capital growth.”

Global agencies such as UNESCO, UNHCR, ILO, UNICEF, and Windle International also participated, underscoring the role of qualification recognition in expanding access to education for displaced and marginalized populations.

The event ended on a unified note, with stakeholders pledging to advance a seamless, standardised qualifications system across East Africa to unlock mobility and regional prosperity.
