Nairobi, June 26, 2025 — The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) is intensifying efforts to enhance road safety in Kenya’s cities through strategic partnerships, according to Director General Eng. Silas Kinoti.

Speaking at a recent stakeholder forum, Kinoti emphasized that addressing the risks of urban congestion, unsafe road use, and rising traffic incidents requires a multi-agency, cross-sectoral approach.

“Urban road safety cannot be achieved in isolation,” Kinoti said. “It demands shared responsibility—from planners, enforcers, designers, to the public itself.”

To tackle the growing challenges of urbanization and increased vehicular traffic, KURA is deploying smart traffic management systems, enhancing road signage, creating non-motorized transport corridors, and training enforcement officers. The agency is also spearheading infrastructure upgrades, including pedestrian walkways and safer intersections in Nairobi and other urban centers.

But Kinoti was clear that hardware isn’t enough: “Infrastructure must be matched with public education.” He called for active engagement with schools, matatu operators, and communities to instill safer road habits.

As urban populations swell, KURA’s vision under Kinoti’s leadership is clear—sustainable, inclusive, and safer roads for all users, from pedestrians and cyclists to drivers and public transport passengers.
