Gov’t Disburses KSh 60M in Kilifi for Human-Wildlife Conflict, Unveils Prevention Strategy

Kilifi, June 26, 2025 — The government has intensified its human-wildlife conflict response in Kilifi County, disbursing over KSh 60 million in compensation to victims and unveiling a bold strategy to prevent future incidents.
Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, speaking in Marafa, called the payouts constitutional entitlements, not charity. “Each cheque restores dignity and symbolizes government accountability,” she said.
Kilifi has reported more than 1,300 conflict cases since 2021, including loss of lives, livestock, and crops. Under the law, families receive up to KSh 5 million for deaths and KSh 3 million for permanent disability.
Nationally, KSh 2.8 billion has been paid, with KSh 1.36 billion still being processed.
Miano also launched a six-point conflict prevention plan, including:
- Digitizing compensation claims
- Restoring wildlife corridors
- Expanding community conservation programs
“Relief is vital, but prevention is the goal,” Miano emphasized, urging deeper collaboration between the state and local communities.
The initiative signals a shift toward a long-term coexistence model, blending policy, tech, and grassroots engagement.
