Matatu Owners Association President Albert Karakacha has urged the government to provide heightened security ahead of planned nationwide protests next week, warning that unchecked violence could cripple Kenya’s public transport sector.

Speaking in Nairobi, Karakacha voiced concern over the destruction of property and rising fear among matatu operators during recent demonstrations. “Many of our members operate on credit. Every damaged vehicle is a direct threat to their ability to repay loans and earn a living,” he said.

He stressed that while peaceful protests are constitutionally protected, they must not infringe on the rights of others. “We’re not against demonstrations, but we are against chaos that destroys investments and livelihoods,” he added.

Karakacha called on security agencies to preemptively secure known protest hotspots to prevent vandalism, looting, and violence. He also appealed to organizers to exercise restraint and ensure their actions do not disrupt businesses or endanger lives.

“If this trend continues, it will paralyze transport operations in major towns, affecting thousands who depend on matatus daily,” he warned.

The Matatu Owners Association plans to present a formal petition to the Ministries of Transport and Interior, demanding clear measures to protect operators, commuters, and infrastructure during protests.
