In a heartfelt address, MYWO National Chairperson Mrs. Rahab Muiu, HSC, celebrated the life and enduring legacy of the iconic stateswoman, hailing her as a fearless champion of women’s rights, a matriarch of Kenya’s women’s movement, and a symbol of unwavering dedication to public service.

Addressing members of the press, Mrs. Muiu described Mama Phoebe as “a towering figure whose leadership helped shape the course of women’s participation in public life.” A pioneer in her own right, Mama Asiyo was remembered as a woman of vision, courage, and compassion whose work transcended generations and inspired thousands.

“Today, we pause to remember her as a pioneer of the women’s empowerment journey in our country; a fearless voice that spoke when others remained silent,” said Muiu.

Mama Phoebe’s legacy in advancing women’s leadership was underscored as one of the cornerstones of her life’s mission. From defying patriarchal norms to sitting at decision-making tables as an equal, she persistently championed the cause of women’s inclusion in leadership and governance. One of the most defining moments of her activism was when she led a delegation of women to Kapenguria to meet Kenya’s founding President, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta—a bold and symbolic gesture that sowed the seeds for affirmative action in the country.

“She dared to dream of a time when women would sit at decision-making tables, not as guests, but as equals,” recalled Mrs. Muiu.

Mama Phoebe Asiyo was also celebrated for her longstanding leadership within MYWO, where she served as the first African President. Her tenure, marked by unity, vision, and authenticity, emphasized that the African woman’s story could only be genuinely told by African women themselves.

“To MYWO, Mama Phoebe was more than a Patron. She was our compass and our conscience,” said Muiu. “Her guidance was clear: MYWO must remain united in service of Kenyan women and the nation at large.”

Known for her deep wisdom and nurturing spirit, Mama Phoebe provided mentorship and strength to generations of women leaders. Her ability to provide clarity in the midst of complexity and her unwavering belief in possibility left an indelible mark.

Mrs. Muiu emotionally noted the personal loss felt across the organization, saying, “I will particularly miss her constant counsel, her affirming words, and the many moments of quiet encouragement we regularly shared.”

As Kenya mourns, MYWO called on the nation to find strength in Mama Phoebe’s legacy and carry forward her vision. Referencing her memoir It Is Possible, Muiu urged Kenyans to honor the foundation Mama Phoebe laid by building upon it with courage and conviction.

“A star has gone before us, but it has not vanished, it lights the path for the rest of us,” she said.

In closing, the MYWO Chairperson bid farewell to the iconic leader with heartfelt words: “Rest well, Mama. You have run your race. You have paved the way. We will carry your torch, and we will miss you dearly.”

Dr. Phoebe Asiyo’s contributions to Kenya’s socio-political fabric, especially her tireless advocacy for women, remain etched in the country’s history. She leaves behind a legacy that continues to inspire and empower future generations.
