In a powerful show of unity, Kenya’s education stakeholders have launched the Education Stakeholders Association of Kenya (ESAK)—a groundbreaking alliance aimed at confronting deep-rooted challenges in the country’s education system.

Comprising teachers’ associations, grassroots movements, and sector-based interest groups, ESAK promises to be a game-changer in championing reforms in curriculum rollout, infrastructure development, teacher welfare, and resource equity.

The alliance boasts a diverse leadership. A national headteachers’ body chairs the group, with vice-chairmanship and secretariat positions filled by educators from marginalized and specialized clusters. Notably, the Kenya Women Teachers Association (KEWOTA) has been entrusted with managing ESAK’s finances—a testament to its credibility and nationwide impact.

KEWOTA CEO Ms. Benter Opande, a key architect of the alliance, said ESAK’s mission is to “move reform from boardrooms to the grassroots,” prioritizing real issues facing teachers and learners.

A strategic retreat recently held by the members mapped out ESAK’s core agenda: harmonizing teacher welfare, promoting inclusive policies, and pushing for urban-rural parity in resource distribution.

“ESAK is not just another forum. It is a bold, unified voice rising from classrooms, not corridors of power,” said a teacher representative from Awendo.

As the alliance finalizes its roadmap ahead of a public launch, expectations are high. For the first time in decades, a coalition driven by lived experience—rather than political interests—is steering the course of educational reform.

Kenya’s education future may have just found its fiercest advocates yet.
