A major shake-up is coming to Kenya’s veterinary training sector, and at the center of it is Dr. Benson Kibore, the no-nonsense Compliance and Market Surveillance Manager at the Kenya Veterinary Board (KVB). In a high-stakes meeting with the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Authority, Dr. Kibore laid down a bold agenda to reform how Kenya trains its veterinary professionals.

Hosted by TVET Acting Director General Timothy Nyongesa Katiambo, the strategic session marked a turning point in efforts to accredit and standardize vet training. Kibore made it clear: “Quality training is not optional—it’s a national priority.”

The urgency? Kenya’s growing demand for skilled animal health professionals is clashing with unregulated and inconsistent training programs. Kibore, alongside KVB’s Quality Assurance lead Dr. Jaquinvidah Gila, stressed the need for strict compliance with legal standards to protect public health and livestock livelihoods.

The outcome? A joint framework is now in the works to police rogue institutions, ensure only accredited programs operate, and make sure graduates are job-ready.

Insiders say this could mean the end for substandard colleges and a new era of skilled, ethical, and market-driven veterinary professionals.

TVET’s top brass, including heads of compliance, accreditation, and standards, agreed to fast-track implementation.

With Kibore at the helm, the message is clear: Kenya’s animal health sector is being rewired—and there’s no room for shortcuts.

This bold move is poised to secure Kenya’s food systems, safeguard animal welfare, and position the country as a regional leader in veterinary training.
