A coalition of youth leaders and professionals has come out strongly in defense of George Ruto’s investment in the Matatu sector, criticizing what they call biased and sensational reporting by The Standard Media Group.

Speaking at a press briefing, the youth accused the media house of misrepresenting George Ruto’s entrepreneurial efforts, noting that his investment has created hundreds of jobs, empowered youth, and transformed public transport in parts of the country.

“This is a model investment that addresses unemployment, promotes dignity in work, and keeps many young people off crime and drugs,” said one youth leader. “It’s disappointing to see it framed as scandalous rather than impactful.”

The group emphasized that the Matatu industry remains a major economic pillar in Kenya, supporting millions of livelihoods directly and indirectly. They lauded Ruto’s move as a clear example of youth-led innovation, aligned with national goals on job creation and transport modernization.

They also urged the media to embrace development journalism that highlights transformative stories, particularly those involving young people who are innovating and creating opportunities.

“The media should inform, educate, and inspire—not sensationalize,” one speaker said. “We expect objectivity and ethical reporting, especially when the story involves youth empowerment.”

Citing the recent MOOD event, which energized Gen Z audiences around creativity and culture, the youth leaders drew parallels between such initiatives and George Ruto’s investment. Both, they said, reflect the new face of Kenya’s youth—solution-driven, enterprising, and forward-looking.

They concluded by calling on all media stakeholders to support narratives that uplift and unite rather than divide, urging a renewed focus on impactful, ethical journalism.
