Nairobi, July 16, 2025 — A heartfelt visit to the home of former AFC Leopards captain and Harambee Stars midfielder Martin Imbalambala has stirred renewed calls for better support systems for Kenya’s retired sports legends.

The ex-midfield maestro, who lost his eyesight in 2018 due to a rare medical condition, was visited at his Hamza residence by a delegation of football veterans and leaders determined to spotlight the plight of forgotten heroes.

During the emotional visit, Imbalambala shared the profound personal and professional struggles he has faced since his abrupt exit from active football. The delegation discussed possible empowerment pathways for athletes living with disabilities, emphasizing the need for sustainable post-career support.

“Martin’s story is one of resilience, pain, and courage. His life is a stark reminder that we must not only celebrate our heroes when they shine, but stand with them when the lights fade,” said one of the leaders present. “No legend should ever be forgotten.”

The delegation included AFC Leopards and Harambee Stars greats Josephat Murila “Controller”, Mickey Weche “T9”, and Mike Amwayi—icons who stood in solidarity with their former teammate.

The visit has sparked fresh debate on the need for national policies that guarantee welfare, healthcare, and economic opportunities for retired athletes, especially those who suffer disability or hardship after dedicating their youth to the nation.

Martin Imbalambala remains a symbol of strength—his spirit unbroken, and his story a rallying cry for justice and dignity for Kenya’s forgotten sports legends.
