Mumias West, Kakamega – Hon. James Namatsi, Speaker of the Kakamega County Assembly, joined H.E. Governor FCPA Fernandes Barasa for the official launch of the 2nd cohort of the Agripreneurs Model at the Mumias Cultural Centre.
The initiative, part of the county’s broader agricultural transformation agenda, seeks to empower the youth and reposition agriculture as a tech-driven, sustainable, and profitable sector. The programme equips young people with practical agribusiness skills, digital tools, and market access to enhance productivity and income generation.
In his remarks, Speaker Namatsi commended the Governor for placing youth empowerment at the heart of the county’s development agenda and reaffirmed the County Assembly’s full support for agribusiness-focused programmes.
“The County Assembly is committed to passing legislation and allocating resources that support agricultural innovation and youth involvement in agribusiness,” he said.
So far, the Agripreneurs Model has trained 420 young agripreneurs and digitally registered over 283,000 farmers through the Kenya Integrated Agriculture Management Information System (KIAMIS). This has significantly improved farmers’ access to farm inputs, markets, and essential extension services.
Also in attendance were County Commissioner Mr. Mwangi Meru, Members of the County Assembly, County Executive Committee Members, NAVCDP representative Merina Atsiaya, and other senior officials.
The launch signals Kakamega County’s growing investment in smart agriculture and youth-led enterprise, reinforcing its vision of inclusive and technology-driven rural development.
