Dr Catherine Nyongesa Leads National Push for Breast Cancer Vigilance and Early Detection

By John Kariuki
Renowned oncologist and Texas Cancer Centre founder Dr Catherine Nyongesa is intensifying her fight against breast cancer, urging Kenyans to embrace vigilance and early detection as the most effective weapons against the disease.
Drawing on global oncology standards, including World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, Dr Nyongesa stresses that public awareness is the first line of defence. She calls on individuals to monitor their health closely, seek prompt medical evaluation, and never ignore early warning signs.
Key indicators requiring urgent attention include changes in nipple shape, alignment, or texture; unusual discharge—especially if blood-stained; sudden lumps in the breast or underarm; skin colour or texture changes; and persistent, unexplained breast or nipple pain.
“Early diagnosis transforms the trajectory of breast cancer treatment,” Dr Nyongesa said, warning against fear-driven delays in seeking care.
Her advocacy extends beyond the clinic, with outreach programmes, community sensitisation drives, and patient empowerment initiatives aimed at breaking stigma and encouraging open dialogue.
Dr Nyongesa’s mission is clear: save lives through awareness, accessible screening, and timely intervention. She calls on all Kenyans to normalise regular breast checks and act decisively at the first sign of irregularity.
“The battle against breast cancer is winnable—if fought with courage, urgency, and unity,” she affirmed.
