Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo on Wednesday steered a groundbreaking conversation at the LSK Annual Conference, championing the inaugural Men Lawyers Forum which addressed men’s mental health, work life balance, and the unspoken weight of social expectations within the legal profession.

Faith underscored that wellbeing is a cornerstone of professional excellence and not a sign of weakness. She stressed that seeking balance between personal and professional life is a necessary commitment to sustainability in legal practice.

“We must create safe spaces for all our members to speak openly about the challenges they face. This is how we strengthen not just individuals but the entire profession,” she told delegates.

The forum drew lawyers from across the country, with discussions spanning the realities of life at the Bar from the intense demands faced by young advocates to the evolving pressures experienced by seasoned practitioners. Participants explored how mental health challenges, long hours, and the expectation of constant resilience have silently shaped the legal fraternity’s culture.

By bringing these issues to the forefront, Faith and the LSK leadership made it clear that mental health in the legal sector is not a private burden but a collective responsibility. Attendees engaged in candid dialogue on stress management, peer support, and dismantling the stigma around mental health.

The Men Lawyers Forum emerged as a timely response to the growing recognition that professional success must go hand in hand with personal wellbeing. Many participants expressed their appreciation for LSK’s bold step in hosting such a conversation, noting that it set a precedent for future conferences.

Faith closed the session with a call for the forum to become a permanent feature in LSK programming, ensuring that open dialogue, mentorship, and wellness support remain central to the Society’s mission.

The 2025 LSK Annual Conference, which kicked off on Wednesday, has been hailed as a platform that not only tackles pivotal legal and social issues but also prioritizes the wellbeing of its members. This year’s conference will be remembered for planting the seeds of a cultural shift where Kenya’s legal fraternity embraces mental health and work life balance as essential pillars of justice and service.
