Leah Sankaire Demands Swift Justice for Child Trafficking Victims in Maimahiu

Kajiado County Woman Representative and Chair of the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA), Hon Leah Sankaire, has issued an urgent call for action following a BBC News Africa exposé revealing harrowing cases of child trafficking and sexual exploitation in Maimahiu, Nakuru County.
In a formal request to the Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security, Hon Sankaire demanded a comprehensive report on the status of investigations and clarity on the steps being taken to identify, arrest, and prosecute perpetrators.
She further urged the government to dismantle trafficking and exploitation networks in Maimahiu and other hotspots, while ensuring immediate care and rehabilitation for survivors, including access to shelter, medical treatment, and counselling.
“Delays in investigation embolden perpetrators and expose children to further harm. These inhumane acts must be urgently addressed to protect our children,” she stated.
Hon Sankaire also pressed for strong preventive measures to safeguard children’s rights nationwide. Her intervention has drawn support from child rights advocates, who stress the need for coordinated action between law enforcement, community leaders, and NGOs to break the cycle of exploitation.
The case now awaits a formal response from the Departmental Committee, which is expected to outline timelines and measures to deliver justice and protection.
Hon Sankaire’s statement reinforces Parliament’s oversight role and KEWOPA’s commitment to defending vulnerable populations—especially women and children—from abuse and exploitation.
