In a vibrant blend of sport and purpose, the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) held its first-ever Engineers Golf Day at Ruiru Sports Club on Saturday, bringing together hundreds of engineers from across the country. The tournament’s noble mission was to raise funds that will enable engineering students across Kenya to join IEK as members.

IEK President Eng. Shammah Kiteme explained that the event is part of a broader mentorship agenda designed to ensure that no engineering student is left behind in their professional journey.

“Every year, about 2,500 students enroll in engineering programs in Kenya. Our goal is to ensure that each one of them becomes a student member of the Institution,” said Eng. Kiteme. “By doing so, we mentor them from their university days into competent and responsible engineers.”

The funds raised will cover student membership fees, helping eliminate financial barriers that often prevent aspiring engineers from joining the professional body. To strengthen this effort, IEK has signed a memorandum of agreement with deans and principals from 17 universities offering engineering courses. The pact ensures structured mentorship and support for students throughout their academic and early professional stages.

Eng. Okova Derek, one of the golfers, noted how the initiative grew from a networking idea into a powerful support system:

“This began as an idea for engineers to network through golf, but it quickly evolved into something more meaningful — creating a fund to support student membership and mentorship. Now, students can join IEK without paying a cent, thanks to the generosity of this community.”

The event attracted more than 250 players and enjoyed strong backing from industry sponsors including Galana Energies, Kenya Pipeline Company, KERA, Davis & Shirtliff, and ICA.

Ruiru Sports Club Captain Justus Mathenge praised IEK for choosing the club as the venue, saying:

“Ruiru is the home of hospitality, and we’re proud to host this unique tournament. Beyond the fun and competition, engineers are using this day to chart a better future for the profession — one that starts with students.”

Participants enjoyed a full day of golf, networking, and fellowship, capped by evening celebrations and awards.

Eng. Titus Koech, an IEK member, summed up the spirit of the day:

“Engineers don’t just build roads and bridges — we also build communities. Supporting the next generation is part of our responsibility, and events like these are instrumental in inspiring and nurturing young engineers.”
