Huawei, in collaboration with Hiperdist, KCB Foundation, and Digion/Smatrace Solutions Ltd., on Tuesday held a Smart Classroom Workshop at its Nairobi offices, demonstrating how digital tools can transform education in underserved communities.

The workshop brought together representatives from 20 Muslim schools across the country to explore the Huawei Smart Classroom Solution—an interactive digital platform designed to improve access, engagement, and learning outcomes.

Hosted at the Huawei Exhibition Room, the event featured live demonstrations, interactive sessions, and group discussions that gave participants hands-on experience with the Smart Classroom tools.

“Technology should serve as an equalizer,” said Maureen Mwaniki, Public Affairs Director at Huawei Kenya. “Our Smart Classroom Solution is not just about digitizing education, but making it accessible to all students, regardless of background.”

A highlight of the event was the announcement that Steadfast Academy will become the first institution to adopt the solution, serving as a model for other schools considering digital learning platforms.

Representing KCB, Ms. Virginia Mwangi, SME Specialist & Relationship Manager, emphasized the bank’s support for inclusive education.

“This partnership reflects our shared vision of equipping schools with the tools needed to prepare students for a digital economy,” she said.

Mwangi added that technology has the potential to bridge gaps, create opportunities, and empower young learners to succeed in a rapidly evolving world.

The workshop builds on Huawei’s broader initiatives to promote digital inclusion in education. Earlier this year, the company, working with UNESCO and the Kenyan government, completed Phase II of the Kenya DigiSchool Connectivity Project, connecting 21 schools—including six institutions for learners with special needs—to high-speed internet. This milestone benefited over 10,000 students, following the success of Phase I, which reached 6,000 learners across 13 schools.

Key impacts of the DigiSchool initiative include: Access to video-conferencing and online learning platforms, Support from the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE), Improved learning outcomes for children with disabilities and enhanced resources for teachers and school administrators

An evaluation of Phase I showed that 98% of students felt internet access supported their education, while 84% reported more engaging lessons and 71% said they understood complex topics better.

The DigiSchool Program is part of Huawei’s global TECH4ALL initiative and aligns with Kenya’s Digital Superhighway Agenda, which seeks to ensure no learner is left behind. Plans for Phase III are already underway to expand connectivity, strengthen teacher training, and enhance digital innovation.

The Smart Classroom Workshop also supports Kenya’s Vision 2030 and contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, it advances SDG 4 (Quality Education) by promoting equitable learning, SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) through technology adoption, SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by bridging the digital divide, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through cross-sector collaboration.

“The launch of Smart Classroom is part of Huawei’s wider commitment to using technology as an enabler of productivity, innovation, and equity in education,” Mwaniki added. “By connecting learners across Kenya, we ensure that every student has an opportunity to thrive in the digital age.”

Through partnerships and scalable solutions, Huawei and its collaborators are helping reshape Kenya’s education system, building a more inclusive, digitally empowered generation.
