Mombasa came to life on Tuesday with the launch of the groundbreaking TukTuk Welfare Program by Maisha Poa, powered by SasaPay to deliver flexible insurance and payment solutions for drivers.

The celebrations began at the iconic Mombasa Tusks, where 30 branded TukTuks paraded through the streets in a lively procession. Music, flags, and cheers lit up the city as residents applauded an initiative addressing a long-neglected issue—social protection for TukTuk drivers.

The launch attracted six SACCOs and more than 200 drivers, many of whom signed up on the spot. By the close of the day, hundreds had embraced the program, signaling pent-up demand for affordable, practical insurance solutions.

For just KSh 30 a day, drivers now have access to medical, funeral, and personal accident insurance under Maisha Poa’s inclusive cover, with SasaPay ensuring seamless mobile contributions.

“This partnership is about taking financial protection where it’s needed most—huku mashinani,” said SasaPay Managing Director Stephen Kaguchia, applauding the milestone in financial inclusion.

The event also received support from Birdview Microinsurance, while Bayleaf Hospital conducted an on-site medical camp, offering free checkups to drivers and their families.

The TukTuk Welfare Program is expected to transform the livelihoods of thousands of coastal transport workers, empowering them with peace of mind and financial security.

With this launch, Mombasa’s TukTuk drivers are no longer just keeping the city moving—they are moving forward with dignity, health, and protection.
