PS Ann Wangombe Champions Bold Measures to End Gender-Based Violence and Femicide in Kenya

By John Kariuki
Kenya is intensifying its fight against gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide under the leadership of Principal Secretary for Gender, Ann Wangombe. Speaking in Nairobi, PS Wangombe reaffirmed her ministry’s commitment to creating safer spaces for women and girls, noting that GBV remains one of the country’s most urgent social challenges.
Central to this effort is the Technical Working Group (TWG) on GBV and femicide, appointed by President William Ruto on 10th January 2025. Having completed its mandate, the TWG is now set to present far-reaching recommendations to significantly curb incidents of violence nationwide.
PS Wangombe, who has worked closely with the team, lauded their professionalism, depth of expertise, and unwavering dedication. She emphasized that their proposals will form the backbone of a comprehensive national strategy to address prevention, survivor support, and accountability for perpetrators.
Under her stewardship, the Ministry of Gender has prioritized legal reforms, awareness campaigns, and rehabilitative support for survivors. PS Wangombe highlighted the importance of community involvement, education, and behavioral change programs to dismantle harmful societal norms that fuel violence against women and girls.
She also underscored the need for multi-sectoral collaboration, urging government agencies, law enforcement, civil society, and local leaders to join forces in building a protective framework that safeguards vulnerable groups while advancing gender equality.
PS Wangombe’s proactive leadership signals a renewed commitment to ending GBV and femicide. Her resolve continues to inspire hope for a safer, fairer, and more inclusive Kenya where women and girls can live free from fear and harm.
