Dr. Ekrah Urges Parents to Master Modern Parenting for Gen Z and Alpha

By John Kariuki
Nairobi, Kenya – Dr. Ekrah Ndung’u, National Chairperson of the Kenya National Association of Private Colleges (KENAPCO), has urged parents to embrace modern parenting strategies to effectively raise Gen Z and Gen Alpha children. She likened the task to navigating a fast-flowing river, stressing that the challenge is not parental failure but a drastically transformed environment.
According to Dr. Ekrah, digital immersion defines these generations, with Gen Alpha growing up in a world where the internet has always existed. Parents now face the dual challenge of managing screen time and promoting online safety while cultivating healthy digital habits.
“Today’s children no longer look to parents alone for answers. They Google, stream YouTube, and crowdsource opinions,” she explained, urging parents to shift from being knowledge gatekeepers to curators of wisdom by fostering dialogue and critical thinking.
She also pointed to rising emotional complexity, noting that Gen Z and Alpha are more expressive and mental health conscious but often overstimulated. Parents, she said, must validate emotions while maintaining boundaries.
Dr. Ekrah further highlighted the influence of global culture, career uncertainty, and identity exploration, calling on parents to build resilience, adaptability, and cultural understanding in their children.
Concluding with a spiritual perspective, she reminded parents that children are an “unfinished product entrusted to them by God,” citing Isaiah 18:8. She emphasized prayer, mentorship, and intentional guidance as essential tools for shaping resilient, purpose-driven youth.
