Permanent Secretary for the State Department for MSMEs, Susan Mang’eni, on Friday hosted a high-level delegation from the German Embassy in Nairobi to discuss strategies aimed at strengthening Kenya’s micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME) sector.
The delegation included Kristina Laarman, Director of the KFW Office in Kenya; Dr. Christoph Zipfel, Program Director at GIZ; Friderike Hemker, Head of Development Cooperation in Sudan and Deputy Head of Cooperation in Kenya; and Maren Kneller, Head of Development Cooperation at the Embassy.
Talks focused on policy reforms, fiscal measures, climate adaptation, and financial innovation, particularly incentivizing banks to adopt lending models that better serve emerging industries. The two sides also explored ways to integrate MSMEs into regional and global value chains.
PS Mang’eni underscored ongoing collaboration with GIZ to finalize a Business Development Services Curriculum and Accreditation Framework by December 2025. The framework will standardize MSME training and enhance the quality of business support services nationwide.
She further noted that MSMEs remain central to job creation and innovation, with opportunities emerging from devolved governance, digitization, sustainability, and new economic sectors.
The meeting was also attended by Robert Muriithi and Charles Kemboi from the Presidential Economic Transformation Secretariat, and Mohammed Doyo, Secretary for MSMEs.
PS Mang’eni thanked Germany for its strong partnership, affirming her commitment to creating an enabling environment for MSMEs to thrive as drivers of Kenya’s economic transformation.
