Nyakera Climbs to Second in Nairobi Governor’s Race, Hailed as ‘Manager Not Politician’

Democratic Congress Party (DCP) candidate Irungu Nyakera has surged to second place in the Nairobi gubernatorial race, just three months after declaring his bid. The latest ISS Africa poll places him at 19.2 percent, behind Embakasi East MP Babu Owino at 28.1 percent. Incumbent Johnson Sakaja follows in third with 16.4 percent, while other contenders trail further back. Notably, 20.3 percent of voters remain undecided, keeping the race wide open.
Nyakera’s rapid rise has been attributed to his managerial credentials and corporate background, which resonate with middle-aged, working-class Nairobians. According to the poll, nearly half of his support comes from voters aged 35 to 44, particularly within the GEMA community.
“What stands out is that Nairobians see me as a manager, not a politician. They want leadership that fixes problems, manages resources, and delivers results. Nairobians are tired of PR, drama, na vipindi,” Nyakera said after the survey results were released.
The poll also highlights a generational divide: Owino dominates among Gen Z and younger millennials, Sakaja draws support from pro-government voters, while Nyakera appeals to those prioritizing service delivery, efficiency, and economic stability.
Analysts note that Nyakera’s managerial style could prove decisive if the undecided bloc gravitates toward issue-based leadership. His growing momentum, combined with rising unity around DCP, has bolstered his confidence.
“Thank you Nairobians. Together we can build a cleaner, safer, and better-managed city,” Nyakera remarked, underscoring his vision of competence-driven governance as Nairobi heads toward 2027.
