President William Ruto has commissioned the Mombasa Commuter Rail Service, a project aimed at boosting transport efficiency in the coastal city and strengthening Kenya’s position as the gateway to Africa.
Speaking on Wednesday in Mombasa, where he was joined by Deputy President Rigathi Kindiki, Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir, and Mining and Blue Economy Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho, the Head of State said the project is part of the government’s broader plan to expand the rail network from Naivasha to Malaba through Kisumu and across the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia corridor.
“The Mombasa Commuter Rail Service marks a bold step in transforming transport by linking the city centre with the SGR terminus at Miritini and other key stops. This will ease congestion while offering Kenyans a faster, safer and more reliable transport system,” President Ruto said.
He noted that restoring port operations to Mombasa from Nairobi has increased cargo volumes by 40 percent over the last two years, creating more jobs and boosting the local economy.
The President further pledged to expand the Mombasa Port later this year, announcing a Ksh.41 billion investment in the project. He also assured residents that the government will fast-track the issuance of title deeds to landowners in the region.
