The discussions follow a September 8, 2025 public notice in the Daily Nation on Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study report No. NEMA/EIA/5/2/2345. The report covers design and construction of social amenities to support protection, restoration, and beautification works within the Nairobi Rivers Basin.

NEMA’s Director of Environmental Compliance, David Ong’are, representing the Director General, acknowledged concerns raised by landowners, noting the matter is before the courts and could not be fully addressed. However, he confirmed that the issues raised will form part of the ongoing EIA public participation process.

Ong’are urged stakeholders, including the public, to continue submitting oral and written comments within the 30-day window provided from the date of publication. He emphasized that inclusive participation is central to transparency and accountability in environmental decision-making.

The Nairobi Rivers Basin project aims to restore the ecological health of the heavily polluted rivers while integrating social amenities to improve the quality of life for nearby communities. Officials say the project will create spaces that promote sustainability, recreation, and economic opportunities.

NEMA reaffirmed its commitment to balancing environmental protection with social and economic concerns, stressing that meaningful community engagement will be key to the project’s long-term success.
