Lugari Member of Parliament Nabii Nabwera has pledged to expose Members of Parliament who have been allegedly using over 300 hectares of Moi University land for personal gain without the institution benefiting. The outspoken MP made the bold statement during a parliamentary session, expressing concern over what he described as governance issues plaguing the university.
The ongoing situation has led to the indefinite closure of Moi University, which has sparked outrage and concerns over the institution’s future. Speaking passionately, MP Nabwera, an alumnus of Moi University, emphasized that the mismanagement of resources and poor governance were at the core of the problems facing the institution. “As a former student of Moi University, I am ashamed of what is happening. It is unacceptable that individuals can use the university’s land for personal gain while the institution suffers,” Nabwera stated.
The Lugari MP revealed that he intends to table the names of the MPs involved, along with evidence, to hold them accountable. He accused those implicated of exploiting the land for agricultural purposes, depriving the university of the potential benefits it could have gained from the land’s use.
In response, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetangula, acknowledged the gravity of the matter and gave Nabwera a two-week deadline to present evidence supporting his claims. Wetangula assured the House that appropriate action would be taken once the allegations are substantiated. “We need to address this issue with urgency. I urge Hon. Nabwera to provide the necessary evidence within two weeks so that the House can deliberate on the matter,” said Wetangula.
The closure of Moi University has raised concerns among students, faculty, and the wider community. Many fear that if the governance issues are not addressed, it could lead to further deterioration of one of Kenya’s leading institutions of higher learning. The situation also highlights broader issues of resource management and accountability within public institutions.
The public now waits to see if MP Nabwera will deliver on his promise and whether the revelations will lead to reforms that can restore stability and governance at Moi University.
