The Kenya Women Parliamentarians Association (KEWOPA) has issued a strong condemnation of the increasing cases of femicide and violence against women and girls across the country. Under the skillful leadership of Hon. Leah Sankaire, KEWOPA’s Chairperson, the association has called for urgent action to address this crisis.
In recent months, KEWOPA has consistently voiced concerns over the distressing rise in femicide and violence targeting women and girls. Despite these warnings, limited progress has been made to confront and curb the issue. The association’s members, deeply saddened by the tragic loss of innocent lives, emphasize that these violent acts are not only crimes but are also attacks on the safety, dignity, and fundamental rights of women and girls. This crisis demands immediate, coordinated action across all government levels.
“As KEWOPA, we continue to sound the alarm on the escalating crisis and advocate for the urgent response required to end the violence,” the association states. They urge the National Police Service, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, and the Judiciary to take swift and decisive action to bring perpetrators to justice and deter future occurrences of these heinous acts.
KEWOPA’s concerns are further compounded by the current vacancy in the position of Cabinet Secretary for Gender, a crucial role that provides leadership in gender protection and empowerment policies. This absence, amid the surge in gender-based violence, signals a troubling lack of priority for gender issues at the highest level.
KEWOPA remains committed to a zero-tolerance approach toward gender-based violence. The association pledges to work closely with the government to accelerate measures addressing gender-based violence, support survivors, and foster public awareness on the rights and safety of women and girls. Despite the challenges, KEWOPA’s advocacy for justice and protection remains unwavering.
“Our nation must end the culture of impunity and protect the dignity of women and girls, a responsibility that rests on us all. Together, we can and must create a safer, more equitable Kenya for everyone,” KEWOPA affirms.
