Elachi Advocates for Accountability in Healthcare and Governance
Beatrice Elachi, MP for Dagoretti North, has called for enhanced accountability in governance and healthcare, urging women parliamentarians to use platforms like the International Parliamentary Forum (IPF) to address pressing issues affecting Kenyans.
Reflecting on 2024 as a challenging year, Hon. Elachi highlighted the economic and healthcare struggles faced by salaried Kenyans, particularly women, who often bear the heaviest burden during crises. She underscored the need for targeted policies to address their unique challenges.
On the Social Health Authority (SHA) framework, Hon. Elachi criticized its architects for inadequate ground assessments, which have led to significant difficulties for citizens. She urged the government to cap mandatory health contributions at the current KSh 500 under the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).
“The government must uphold Article 43 of the Constitution, guaranteeing the right to healthcare. Institutions under SHA must be paid promptly, and Kenyans deserve transparent access to healthcare information,” she asserted.
Hon. Elachi emphasized the importance of public awareness, calling on the government to educate citizens about specialized medical services like dialysis and oncology. “Information is power. People must know where to access critical healthcare services,” she said.
She also urged fellow parliamentarians, especially women leaders, to lead with integrity and accountability to restore public trust. “Kenyans are frustrated because they pay taxes but don’t see tangible benefits. We must change this narrative and deliver results that directly improve their lives,” she concluded.
Her remarks come amid growing public demand for transparent governance and effective healthcare delivery. Hon. Elachi’s call highlights the urgent need for reforms that prioritize the welfare of all Kenyans.
