KENAS Launches Historic Training on Biobank Accreditation to ISO 20387:2018
By Njeri Irungu
A groundbreaking two-day training on the accreditation of biobanks to ISO 20387:2018 has commenced, marking a pivotal moment for the Kenya Accreditation Service (KENAS) and the entire African continent. This training aims to set a new standard for biobanks across Africa, ensuring they operate at globally recognized levels of quality, accountability, and transparency.
Biobanks play a critical role in scientific, medical, and biotechnology advancements by storing biological samples that fuel research in genomics, drug development, cancer treatment, and public health interventions. Proper management of these samples is essential for accurate research outcomes and advancements in patient care.
The training underscores the importance of ISO 20387:2018, a global standard that provides a framework for managing biobank operations with integrity and ethical responsibility. The standard covers the handling, storage, and utilization of biological samples and associated data, ensuring they meet the highest levels of trustworthiness.
KENAS is making history by becoming the first accreditation body in Africa to offer formal accreditation to biobanks under ISO 20387:2018. This significant step will position African biobanks as competitive and trusted partners in global research collaborations, opening doors for increased partnerships, funding opportunities, and scientific advancements.
Speaking at the opening of the training, KENAS officials emphasized that this initiative is not just about technical compliance but about empowering African researchers to become global leaders in biotechnology and medical research. Accreditation will give local scientists the credibility to collaborate on higher-quality clinical trials and contribute to groundbreaking medical interventions.
In addition to highlighting the transformative nature of this milestone, KENAS expressed deep gratitude to the British Standards Institute (BSI) for its generous support in sponsoring the training. BSI’s expertise and continued collaboration are seen as invaluable contributions to advancing biobank accreditation in Africa.
The event concluded with a call to action for participants to embrace this transformative moment and actively contribute to building a legacy of excellence and global recognition for African biobanks. The training is expected to leave a lasting impact on Africa’s research and healthcare landscape, empowering scientists and institutions to make significant contributions to global scientific advancements.
This historic journey led by KENAS signifies a new era for African research, ensuring that local biobanks meet international standards and that the continent remains a trusted and vital player in global scientific discoveries.
