Breaking Barriers: Making Books Affordable for Every Child

By John Kariuki
Nairobi, Kenya – World Book Day is not just a celebration of literature but a call to action to make books affordable and accessible to all learners. Speaking at the World Book Day celebrations in Makadara Sub-County, Dr. Paul Wanjohi of Sharp Education Center emphasized the urgent need to address the rising cost of books that limits access to knowledge.
He urged policymakers to review taxation on books and learning materials, arguing that education should not be a luxury. He also called on the Ministry of Education and publishers to fast-track the distribution of rationalized textbooks, ensuring consistency in learning and reducing the burden on parents.
Dr. Wanjohi challenged teachers to play an active role in writing books, especially under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), where locally relevant materials are needed. He also advocated for a hybrid approach, combining hard copy and digital books, to expand learning opportunities for students across Kenya, including in marginalized areas.
“Let us ensure every child has access to the books they need, regardless of their background,” he urged. “Investing in books is investing in the future.”
