Nairobi, Kenya – Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, EGH, has launched the Strategic Human Capital Initiatives for Eastern Africa, an initiative aimed at strengthening the region’s tourism workforce. The program, spearheaded by the Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre – Eastern Africa at Kenyatta University, seeks to equip young professionals with industry-relevant skills and drive innovation and sustainability in the sector.
CS Miano emphasized the importance of industry-academia collaboration, stating that preparing young professionals with practical skills and leadership training is crucial for tourism resilience and global competitiveness.
“For tourism to remain resilient and competitive, we must invest in our youth,” she stated. “Strengthening industry-academia collaboration ensures that young professionals are prepared to drive innovation and sustainability in the tourism sector.”
The initiative comes as the global tourism industry recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, adapting to new market trends, digital transformation, and environmental sustainability. It aligns with regional efforts to enhance tourism resilience and crisis management.
CS Miano called on private sector players, academic institutions, and government agencies to work together in building a more inclusive and competitive tourism sector. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to youth empowerment and long-term sustainability in tourism.
“Africa has immense potential to become a premier tourism destination. Through strategic investments in human capital, we can enhance our competitiveness, attract global visitors, and create more opportunities for our people,” she added.
With strong leadership, collaboration, and skills development, Eastern Africa is set to position itself as a global hub for tourism excellence.
