KEWOPA Champions Disability Rights and Inclusive Development in Landmark Forum

The Kenya Women Parliamentarians Association (KEWOPA), led by Chairperson Hon. Leah Sankaire, has renewed its commitment to disability rights through a powerful advocacy forum held in partnership with Women Challenged to Challenge (WCC). The forum brought together women legislators and disability rights organizations to push for stronger implementation of inclusive laws and development policies.

Hon. Sankaire urged for reforms that are gender-responsive and inclusive of persons with disabilities, stating, “Disability becomes a tragedy when society fails to provide the things we need to lead our lives.” She called for deliberate inclusion across legislation, budgeting, and national programs.

A key highlight was the emphasis on the Persons with Disabilities Act, 2023, which has been passed by Parliament and is awaiting presidential assent. The new law aligns Kenya’s framework with the Constitution and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
