KTDA Engages Imperial College London in Landmark Sustainability Partnership for Smallholder Tea Farmers

In a bold step toward driving sustainable development in Kenya’s tea sector, KTDA National Chairman Chege Kirundi, alongside board members John Wasusana and Baptista Kanyaru, met with experts from Imperial College London to lay the groundwork for a transformative partnership.
Accompanied by Sudi Matara (General Manager, KTDA Foundation) and Vincent Mwingirwa (General Manager, Sales & Marketing), the KTDA delegation engaged with Professor Jem Woods, Director of the Centre for Environmental Policy, and Dr. Onesmus Mwabonje, a lead sustainability researcher at Imperial College. The discussions focused on formalizing a partnership framework to align with KTDA’s Farmer First, Leave No Farmer Behind transformation strategy.
The proposed partnership will center on sustainable agriculture, climate action, energy and e-mobility, and value addition across the smallholder tea value chain—key levers to boost farmer earnings and environmental resilience.
Dr. Mwabonje, who has helped strengthen research collaboration between Imperial, KTDA, and the University of Nairobi, reaffirmed the potential for joint innovation to advance tea sector sustainability both locally and globally.
The collaboration is set to position KTDA and Kenya’s tea industry at the forefront of climate-smart agriculture and inclusive value chain development.
