PS Charles Hinga Explores Mukuru Social Housing Project, Aims to Transform Nairobi’s Urban Future

By John Kariuki
Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing Kenya’s affordable housing crisis during a detailed inspection of the Mukuru Social Housing Project in Nairobi County. Once completed, the landmark development will deliver 13,248 modern housing units, offering dignified, affordable living for thousands of city residents.
The project features a balanced mix of 5,616 studio apartments, 3,024 one-bedroom, and 4,608 two-bedroom units, designed to accommodate the varied needs of Nairobi’s growing urban population.
Beyond housing, the development includes modern infrastructure and community amenities: high-speed lifts, refuse chutes, sewer systems, parking spaces, and a spacious courtyard to foster social interaction and community life.
Speaking on-site, PS Hinga emphasized that the government’s vision goes beyond structures. “This project isn’t just about building houses—it’s about building livable, inclusive communities with dignity and opportunity at their core.”
The Mukuru initiative falls under the Boma Yangu affordable housing program, a flagship of the national government’s plan to transform informal settlements into safe, structured, and serviced urban spaces.
As part of Kenya’s broader urban renewal strategy, the Mukuru Social Housing Project stands to significantly improve the lives of low- and middle-income earners while setting the standard for future developments nationwide.
