Optiven Foundation Hands Over Modern Science Laboratory to Makobeni Secondary School in Kilifi

Makobeni Secondary School received a major boost after the Optiven Foundation officially handed over a fully equipped, state-of-the-art science laboratory to the school community.
The milestone event, attended by students, teachers, parents, local leaders, and Optiven Foundation representatives, marked the culmination of a journey that began with a groundbreaking ceremony on 16th January 2025.
Located on the outskirts of Malindi, Makobeni Secondary School serves 150 students—many from vulnerable backgrounds. With only eight staff members and a chronic shortage of classrooms and facilities, the school had long struggled to provide a conducive learning environment. Until now, students had never seen a proper laboratory—let alone used one—and often had to travel over 100 miles to access practical science equipment.
“This lab will change the future of our children,” said one teacher. “For many, this will be the first time they touch lab equipment before an exam.”
Funded entirely by the Optiven Foundation at a cost of KSh 10.5 million, the project falls under the Foundation’s Education Pillar, which also supports scholarship programs, TVET initiatives, and mentorship through the George Wachiuri School of Mentorship. Local artisans and youth who participated in the construction also benefited economically, aligning with the Foundation’s Poverty Eradication Pillar.
Speaking at the handover, Dr. George Wachiuri, Chairman of the Optiven Foundation, thanked Optiven customers for their continued support and urged professionals from the area to reinvest in their roots.
The day concluded with further acts of generosity: donations of food, sanitary pads, and footballs, reinforcing the Foundation’s ethos—Eyes on the Community.
Makobeni now has not just a building, but a beacon of opportunity.
