Matatu Owners Association Holds Strategic Dialogue with Kalonzo Musyoka Over Sector Woes

Matatu Owners Association (MOA) held a high-level consultative meeting with Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka at the SKM Command Centre in Nairobi, signaling a renewed push for policy engagement and sectoral stability.
Led by MOA President Albert Karakacha and CEO Patricia Mutheu, the meeting tackled pressing issues facing matatu operators, notably the collapse of Invesco Assurance Company Limited—a key insurer predominantly owned by matatu stakeholders. Since its financial implosion in February 2023, operators have been left vulnerable to insurance gaps and operational risks.
“Our members are exposed and need urgent reforms to survive,” said Karakacha, whose firm yet collaborative tone underscored MOA’s growing influence in national transport policy discussions.
Kalonzo, known for his statesmanship and focus on grassroots empowerment, pledged to escalate the matatu sector’s concerns to relevant legislative and executive arms of government.
“The matatu industry is the backbone of daily mobility for millions of Kenyans. We must treat its health as a national priority,” he affirmed.
The discussion centered on regulatory clarity, insurance reform, and long-term sector sustainability, with both parties agreeing on the need for an inclusive public transport policy framework that protects investors and commuters alike.
The meeting marks a pivotal step in reenergizing dialogue around Kenya’s informal transport sector—one that moves the country, yet remains chronically underprotected
