Kirinyaga Senator James Kamau Murango has issued a strong condemnation following what he described as a brazen and unjustified act of intimidation against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua by heavily armed police officers.
Terming the incident “a disgraceful abuse of state power,” Senator Murango accused unnamed state actors of attempting to silence the Deputy President through fear and force. “This reckless deployment of security forces to intimidate a serving Deputy President is not only deplorable but a direct assault on our Constitution and the principles of democratic governance,” he said.
Senator Murango warned against the resurgence of authoritarian tactics, emphasizing that Kenya must remain committed to democratic norms and the rule of law. “The era of weaponizing state institutions to suppress divergent voices is over. Freedom of expression and political association are non-negotiable rights in our democracy,” he stated.
Calling for accountability, Murango urged relevant authorities to investigate the incident and ensure those responsible are held to account. “This is not just about one leader—it is about protecting the democratic space for all Kenyans. No one should be subjected to harassment or intimidation for expressing their views.”
The senator’s remarks come amid growing concern over alleged political interference and misuse of state machinery to settle internal disputes. His statement adds to a chorus of voices demanding the protection of constitutional freedoms and an end to politically motivated intimidation.
“This is a defining moment for our democracy,” Murango concluded. “We must stand firm against any attempt to erode the hard-won rights and liberties of the people.”
