Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Director General Prof. Erustus Kanga has led a major rhino conservation initiative in the Lewa-Borana Landscape, reinforcing his reputation as a champion of science-driven wildlife protection.

In partnership with Lewa and Borana Conservancies, KWS carried out a detailed ear-notching and tracking operation involving 46 black and white rhinos. The initiative supports Kenya’s Rhino Conservation and Management Strategy, which prioritizes individual rhino monitoring and enhanced protection measures.

“This operation reflects our unwavering commitment to safeguarding Kenya’s natural heritage through evidence-based action,” said Prof. Kanga. “Improved tracking helps us protect these animals more effectively and understand their behavior.”

Rhinos were safely immobilized and ear-notched according to international standards set by the IUCN SSC African Rhino Specialist Group. GPS devices were installed on select animals to gather data on movement and habitat use. Samples were also collected for genetic analysis, forensic identification, and disease monitoring, strengthening the country’s ability to detect threats and manage rhino health.

Prof. Kanga highlighted the value of partnerships, saying collaboration with private conservancies is essential for long-term species survival. The success of this initiative demonstrates how targeted, science-based approaches and stakeholder cooperation can significantly advance wildlife conservation.

Kenya’s leadership in conservation continues to grow, thanks to the proactive, research-led efforts of KWS and committed partners under Prof. Kanga’s stewardship.
