Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife Rebecca Miano, EGH, has today spearheaded the rollout of the third phase of the Human-Wildlife Conflict Compensation Exercise in Murera, Meru County, alongside His Excellency President William Ruto.

The initiative marks a significant step in addressing the long-standing grievances of communities affected by human-wildlife conflict, particularly those living adjacent to protected areas and wildlife corridors. It is part of the government’s broader commitment to strengthening coexistence between communities and wildlife while advancing conservation efforts nationwide.

“Under President Ruto’s leadership, Kenya has witnessed extraordinary support for conservation,” CS Miano said. “This includes the recruitment of more rangers, expansion of conservancies, restoration of wildlife habitats, and a strong push for global recognition of nature-based solutions.”

The exercise is aimed at compensating victims of wildlife-related incidents, including loss of life, injury, crop destruction, and property damage. By addressing these concerns, the government seeks to rebuild trust and reinforce public participation in conservation efforts.

Present at the event were Interior CS Prof. Kithure Kindiki and officials from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), whose roles have been instrumental in the implementation of compensation programs and broader wildlife protection frameworks.

The compensation program is part of Kenya’s holistic strategy to mitigate human-wildlife conflict while positioning the country as a global leader in conservation.
