Dr. Tonny Omwansa Launches Student Innovation Mentorship to Bridge Skills Gap

By John Kariuki
Nairobi, Kenya — Dr. Tonny Omwansa, CEO of the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA), has kicked off a new mentorship program targeting university students, aimed at turning academic theory into real-world innovation.
Launched this week, the University Students Mentorship Program is designed to equip learners with practical skills and inspire them to form student-led innovation clubs on campus. “We hope this program complements what you learn in school and sparks real action,” said Dr. Omwansa.
The program goes beyond lectures, focusing on hands-on experiences to nurture problem solvers and future entrepreneurs. A standout session on Design Thinking was led by innovation consultant Yvonne Njeri, who walked students through ideation tools to build purpose-driven startups.
“Innovation isn’t just about building products,” said Njeri. “It’s about solving real problems with clarity, empathy, and courage.”
The initiative reflects a broader push to strengthen Kenya’s innovation pipeline by empowering students to be job creators, not just job seekers.
As the mentorship series unfolds, the focus remains clear: instill a mindset of action, resilience, and user-focused problem-solving in Kenya’s next generation of changemakers.
