Embakasi North Member of Parliament James Gakuya has strongly defended Kenya’s Generation Z, saying they have little to celebrate one year after the massive June protests that rocked the country in 2024.

Speaking candidly, Gakuya said the government has failed to address the real issues raised by the youth, particularly concerning the high cost of living and unemployment. He criticized the current administration for turning a blind eye to their plight.

“As we speak, the cost of living has skyrocketed, and there are no jobs for the youth. President Ruto has given their concerns a deaf ear,” Gakuya said.

His comments come amid renewed youth-led protests driven by social media activism, calling out corruption, economic mismanagement, and lack of accountability. Gakuya urged the government to stop labeling Gen Z protesters as criminals, warning that such rhetoric is both unfair and dangerous.

“These Gen Zs are speaking on behalf of millions of struggling Kenyans — the silent majority. They are not criminals; they are patriots demanding justice, dignity, and a better future,” he said.

Gakuya warned that dismissing the voices of the youth could have far-reaching consequences for the country. “Whatever they are saying should be taken seriously. Kenya will go to the dogs if we don’t listen and act,” he cautioned.

The MP’s remarks reflect growing concern among some lawmakers about the government’s approach to youth discontent, which continues to fuel widespread dissatisfaction. With unemployment rates climbing and inflation burdening households, Gen Z has emerged as a powerful political force — vocal, fearless, and digitally mobilized.

As tensions rise, Gakuya’s call for dialogue and accountability offers a rare moment of political solidarity with Kenya’s young generation, whose future remains uncertain under current conditions.
