Kenya’s Engineering Education Strengthened as EBK Accredits TUM Programs

Kenya’s push for world-class engineering education received a major boost this week as the Engineering Board of Kenya (EBK) conducted a high-level accreditation assessment at the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM).
Led by the Engineering Accreditation Committee (EAC), the evaluation reviewed TUM’s engineering programs against national and international benchmarks. EBK’s inspection team scrutinized the university’s labs, workshops, and academic facilities while also engaging with students on their learning experiences and industry readiness.
EBK Chairman Eng. Erastus K. Mwongera hailed the progress in accreditation, revealing that 95% of submitted engineering programs have been evaluated. He emphasized the importance of aligning Kenya’s training standards with global norms, especially following Kenya’s recent entry into the Washington Accord as a provisional signatory—a move that enhances international recognition of Kenyan engineering qualifications.
The Washington Accord is a global pact that facilitates cross-border recognition of accredited engineering degrees. Kenya’s inclusion was made possible through mentorship by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC).
EBK CEO Eng. Margaret Ogai has been key in advancing this vision. Her leadership has fast-tracked accreditation efforts and strengthened Kenya’s positioning in the global engineering arena.
TUM Vice Chancellor Prof. Laila Abubakar welcomed the EBK delegation, calling the exercise a vital step toward deeper academic-industry collaboration and a mark of confidence in the university’s engineering programs.
The accreditation marks another milestone in Kenya’s journey toward engineering excellence—one that affirms the country’s readiness to compete globally and lead innovation across East Africa.
