Nairobi, Kenya — Kenya Women Teachers Association (KEWOTA) CEO Benter Opande has called for urgent policy reforms in the education sector after data from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) revealed a stark gender disparity in teacher misconduct cases.

Of the 470 teachers deregistered over the last five years due to professional misconduct, 90% were male, with only five female teachers affected. Forty-six cases were not classified by gender.

“This trend is deeply troubling and demands serious reflection on recruitment, mentorship, and accountability mechanisms in our schools,” said Opande.

She emphasized the need for enhanced ethical training, mental health support, and continuous professional development — particularly for male teachers who appear overrepresented in disciplinary actions.

“This isn’t about blaming men,” she added. “It’s about protecting our children by building safe, nurturing environments and addressing the underlying causes of misconduct.”

Opande proposed that financial literacy be integrated at the teacher training college level, citing poor financial management as a root cause in many indiscipline cases. She also urged TSC to decentralize mental wellness support by establishing regional centers where teachers can access regular counseling without stigma.

“Supporting teacher well-being is key to restoring discipline and professionalism in our schools,” she concluded.

Her remarks come amid growing concern about the need for structural reforms to protect learners and support educators struggling with stress, addiction, and burnout.
