Richard Muteti Powers MSME Revolution Across East Africa
By John Kariuki
Richard Muteti, HSC, is redefining the future of small businesses in East Africa. As CEO of the Confederation of Micro and Small Enterprises Organisation East Africa and Chair of the COMESA Business Council SMEs Work-Group, Muteti is at the forefront of empowering micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across the region.
Through his visionary leadership, the Confederation has expanded its reach to include countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, unlocking new opportunities in cross-border trade and policy integration. His latest milestone came during the official handover of the SME Handbook to Wakili Allan Kosgey of the Kenya Industrial Property Institute—a vital resource designed to help MSMEs grow sustainably while protecting their intellectual property.
Muteti has also championed Kenya’s Recognition of Prior Learning Policy, ensuring that jua kali artisans and informal sector workers finally receive recognition for their skills. This move has opened access to financing, training, and employment for thousands of previously excluded workers.
At the continental level, Muteti is driving policy harmonization across COMESA states to eliminate trade barriers and support MSMEs under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
From incubation hubs and artisan clusters to business development programs and financial linkages, his grassroots-centered approach is transforming the region’s economic landscape.
Muteti’s people-first strategy is proving that small enterprises are not just survivors—they’re drivers of Africa’s inclusive economic growth
