Kenya’s most elite circle of legal minds has entered a new chapter. Philip K. Murgor, SC, has been elected Chairperson of the Senior Counsel Bar (SCB), an institution that represents the highest standards of legal excellence in the country. With his wealth of experience, commanding presence, and unwavering dedication to justice, Murgor is expected to steer the SCB into a future defined by bold advocacy, deeper mentorship, and stronger national influence.

Joining him at the helm is Vice Chairperson Joyce Majiwa, SC, a trailblazer in women’s rights and social justice, and Secretary Charles Kanjama, SC, renowned for his sharp legal intellect and policy expertise. Together, this leadership team signals a renewed commitment to strengthening the voice and impact of the Senior Counsel Bar.

The announcement was made during the SCB’s annual retreat at the Diamond Leisure Lodge in Diani, where members gathered to strategize on the fraternity’s role in shaping Kenya’s legal landscape. Murgor takes over from the distinguished Dr. Fred N. Ojiambo, SC, MBS, who has led with grace and authority since 2013, building on the foundation laid by the late Hon. Mutula Kilonzo, SC, the SCB’s second Chairperson.

Founded in 2003 with Hon. Sitswila Amos Wako, SC, EGH, as its inaugural Chairperson, the Senior Counsel Bar stands as the pinnacle of legal achievement. Its members, the crème de la crème of the profession, have long been the custodians of professional integrity, the rule of law, and mentorship for young lawyers.

In his acceptance remarks, Murgor pledged to amplify the SCB’s influence on legal reforms, defend judicial independence, and foster a culture of continuous mentorship. “This role is not about titles or positions. It is about service to justice, preserving the dignity of our profession, and ensuring our voice resonates far beyond courtrooms,” he said.

Outgoing Chairperson Dr. Ojiambo lauded the incoming team’s dedication and urged them to safeguard the values that make the SCB a beacon of justice. His tenure will be remembered for bridging divisions within the profession and strengthening the SCB’s credibility on matters of national importance.

With Murgor’s seasoned leadership, Majiwa’s tireless advocacy, and Kanjama’s strategic insight, the SCB is poised for a transformative era. The message from Diani was clear — the Senior Counsel Bar is not merely keeping the flame of justice alive, it is igniting it into a blazing torch for the nation’s legal future.
