Busia, Kenya – Busia County Woman Representative Hon. Catherine Omanyo has strengthened the county’s anti-gender-based violence (GBV) campaign after meeting with Principal Secretary for Gender and Affirmative Action, Ann Wangombe.
The high-level engagement brought together leaders and stakeholders to chart strategies aimed at curbing GBV and building safer, more inclusive communities.
Hon. Omanyo, a long-standing advocate for women’s and vulnerable groups’ rights, stressed that tackling GBV requires a united front spanning leadership, institutions, and grassroots networks. “Gender-based violence is not only a violation of human rights but a major barrier to health, education, and economic progress,” she said.
She highlighted ongoing initiatives under her office, including awareness campaigns in schools and communities, the establishment of safe spaces for women and children, and partnerships with civil society to provide survivors with medical, legal, and counseling support.
PS Wangombe emphasized the need for collaboration in mobilizing resources, strengthening legal frameworks, and enhancing psychosocial services. Together, the leaders underscored that sustained community involvement is key to protecting survivors and holding perpetrators accountable.
The meeting reaffirmed Busia’s commitment to becoming a model county in the fight against GBV, with inclusive, community-driven approaches at the core of its strategy.
