Nairobi MCAs have asked the Nairobi Metropolitan Services and the County Government to stop harassing investors and residents who are running business startups.
The legislators have warned that the continued harassment and intimidation of investors by city inspectorate officers could see such investors opt to settle in neighboring counties.
They want the executive to stop unnecessary demolition of property and that if there is need for such, then due process should be followed.
Parklands MCA Malde Jayendra said that the escalating battles between the county and the business community will affect revenue collection in the county if not handled with care.
“ Why are they harassing and demolishing businesses left right and centre without following due process at a time when we are supposed to support businesses to recover from the Covid-19 effects,” Malde asked.
Malde confirmed receiving several complaint cases by residents of the Business Community over harassment by askaris from the County and the NMS.
The chairman of the justice and legal committee John Komu urged the affected residents and investors to be patient as the county assembly takes up the matter for law to take it’s course.
The Nairobi County Inspectorate Act 2017 states that the City Inspectorate Department is tasked with enforcement in order to prevail and maintain the County.
He said this when victims of such harassment appeared before the assembly’s Justice and Legal committee to share their grievances.
