University Unions comprising of University’s Academic Staff Union (UASU), Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSO) and Kenya Unions of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions and Hospital Workers(KUDHEIHA) have today demanded for the full implementation of 2017-2021 CBAs in the public universities.
The three unions representing staffs in all public universities alleged that over 65% have placed staff diagonally in accordance with the signed 2017-2021 CBA including University of Nairobi, Jomo Kenyatta University, Kenyatta University of Science and Technology together with Masinde Muliro University.
“A few universities are particularly problematic as they pay staff basic salary rates of 2017. These are Egerton, Murang’a and University of Embu while Technical University of Kenya is paying it’s own unique rates. You can see why the strike biting at Egerton university,” he said.
UASU secretary general Constantine Wasonga said 18% universities apply different versions of horizontal placement which factors only some annual increments to the basic salary including Kenya University, Kirinyaga and Cooperative University.
UASU Organizing Secretary General Onesmas Mutio said the National Implementation Committee audited the CBA from September 28 this year and found out that some staff promoted from lower to higher grades in many cases earn less than non-promoted staff in previous grades.
He said most universities owe staff over forty months salary arrears. The unions call on the government and Universities councils to fully implement the CBA in accordance with the judgement of the employment and labour relations court.
