Carrefour, owned and operated by Majid Al Futtaim in Kenya, has taken a proactive step in supporting the local community by initiating a corporate social responsibility project dubbed ‘Round Up Your Bill.’
This campaign allows customers to voluntarily round up their shopping bills by a few shillings, which are then used to provide essentials for local communities.
In this specific project, Carrefour has announced the construction of a modern kitchen, hand washing stations, and book racks, as well as the installation of a solar water pumping system and a 5,000-litre water tank at Gacharage Primary School in Kiambu county.
The entire initiative cost KES 5 million and was made possible with the support of Carrefour’s customers.
Over 850 students at Gacharage Primary School will benefit from these new installations.
The modern kitchen will cater to the students’ meals, and the provision of clean water will improve the students’ hygiene and sanitation, ultimately leading to a better learning environment and improved academic performance.

Mr. Christophe Orcet, Regional Director of Carrefour – East Africa, Majid Al Futtaim Retail reiterated Carrefour’s commitment to making a difference in local communities across Kenya through similar social protection initiatives.

Through our customers’ collective contribution, we were able to raise enough funds to improve the welfare of the students at Garachage Primary School, providing them with access to clean water and daily meals. We remain committed to transforming local communities across the country with similar social protection initiatives.” He said
Joseph Karuma, the Head Teacher of Gacharage Primary School, expressed his understanding of the crucial connection between nutrition, hygiene, sanitation, and its impact on the students’ learning outcomes.
“The new installations provided by Carrefour’s ‘Round Up Your Bill’ initiative, such as the modern kitchen catering for the children’s meals and the availability of clean water, will contribute to creating a conducive learning environment for my pupils”.
he added that with the new facilities in place, the students at Gacharage Primary School will have a better chance of academic success and improved performance.
“Having access to nutritious meals and clean water is vital for the well-being of the pupils and students. Proper nutrition supports their physical and cognitive development, while improved hygiene and sanitation facilities promote better health and reduce the risk of illness, thereby enhancing their ability to focus and learn effectively.” Said Mr Karuma
Carrefour currently operates 20 stores across the country, with a presence in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu.
