The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has seized 200 cartons of assorted medicines from 400 premises inspected across the country. The crackdown is part of the government’s broader initiative to eradicate drug and substance abuse.

Dr. Fred Siyoi, CEO of the PPB, announced the operation in a statement to the media on Friday, emphasizing the board’s commitment to regulating pharmacy practices. “This operation was initiated to ensure compliance with good distribution practices, especially concerning narcotic and psychotropic substances,” Dr. Siyoi said.

He further explained that the operation was a response to 25 presidential directives issued on March 7th, which aim to combat illicit brews, alcohol, drug, and substance abuse. “The Pharmacy and Poisons Board launched a joint multi-agency operation nationwide to enforce these directives,” Dr. Siyoi noted.

During the operation, the PPB inspected 400 premises and seized 200 cartons of assorted medicines. These seized drugs will serve as exhibits in pending court proceedings and will later be disposed of in accordance with applicable rules and regulations.

Dr. Siyoi also issued a warning to the public about the risks associated with purchasing medicines from unlicensed distribution chemists. “Consumers should be cautious of chemists operating without names, which is a key indicator of illegality. Such establishments may sell drugs that do not meet regulatory standards and could pose health risks,” he cautioned.

He further urged the public to avoid unregistered medicines, emphasizing that they may not meet the required standards set by the PPB. “It’s crucial for consumers to verify the legitimacy of the pharmacies they buy from and to ensure that the medicines they purchase are from licensed and reputable sources,” Dr. Siyoi added.

The PPB’s crackdown underscores the importance of stringent regulation and oversight in the pharmaceutical sector to safeguard public health. As the government continues its efforts to combat drug and substance abuse, such operations are expected to become more frequent to ensure compliance with the law and protect consumers from potential harm.
