The Blue Economy, Water, and Irrigation Committee convened today to outline its agenda for the final quarter of the 2023/24 Financial Year. Chaired by Hon. Kangogo Bowen of Marakwet East, the committee’s discussions will primarily focus on pressing issues affecting water and irrigation sectors.
One of the critical topics to be addressed is the flooding situation in the Mwea Irrigation Scheme and its adjacent areas. The committee will host stakeholder meetings to delve deeper into concerns raised by Mwea MP, Hon. Mary Maingi. Hon. Maingi has expressed grave concerns over the flooding affecting families in her constituency and seeks clarity on the Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation’s intervention measures.
Specifically, Hon. Maingi has requested information on the emergency response strategies employed to tackle flood-related challenges in Mwea. Additionally, she is keen to understand the regulatory frameworks in place for regular desiltation and maintenance of water canals to prevent flooding.
In addition to the flooding issue, the committee will also scrutinize the Supplementary Budget II for the 2023/24 Financial Year. They will also review the Budget Estimates for the upcoming 2024/25 Financial Year for the Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) falling under their oversight.
The committee’s proactive approach to addressing these issues demonstrates its commitment to ensuring the well-being of Kenyan citizens and the effective management of water resources. Stakeholders and the public await the outcomes of these deliberations with anticipation, hoping for practical solutions to the pressing challenges facing the water and irrigation sectors.
